Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- How would you define ‘wisdom’? What characteristics would you associate with wise people?
- Review Prov 1:1-7. How does this set the tone for the rest of the book? Which section of this passage, or the message, is most timely and relevant for you? Why?
- How do we take steps to grow in wisdom? What helps you to ‘be wise’? How does this passage help us in this regard? (The call to wisdom runs through all of Proverbs but also see 1:20-33; 2:1-11; 3:13-18; 4:5-7; etc.) What are you doing to increasingly ‘be wise’?
- In what area do you especially need wisdom? What difference would wisdom make in this area? (This is part of the benefit of reading through Proverbs – look for what God’s word says to address this area.)
- Why do you think the ‘fear of the Lord’ is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom? How have you thought about the fear of the Lord? More importantly, how are you living in the ‘fear of the Lord’? (For further references on this see: Prov 1:7, 29; 2:5; 3:7; 8:13; 9:10; 10:27; 14:2,26,27; 15:16,33; 16:6; 19:23; 22:4; 23:17,18; 24:21; 28:14; 31:30; Deut 4:10; 17:18,19; 31:11-13; Ps 25:14; 34:9-11; 147:11; Eccl 12:13,14; Is 33:6; Mt 10:28; Phil 2:12,13; Heb 12:28,29; etc.)
- How could the fear of the Lord be a part of your daily life as you seek to ‘be wise’ (especially see Prov 23:17)?
- Are you reading a chapter of Proverbs a day? Is there something from this week’s reading that has particularly stood out to you?
