Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- How would you describe current attitudes toward “authority” in general? How about the attitudes toward “submission”?
- In light of that, how does 1 Peter 2:13f challenge us today?
- Consider v13-20 as applications or specific cases of how to live out v11, 12. How does our attitude and behavior toward authority reflect on our witness?
- Talk about government (v13-17). Recall the context/background of 1 Peter and then think of our current authorities. What does this passage have to say to you about your response to governmental authorities?
- Talk about those you work for (v18-20). First, do you agree that this is NOT an endorsement of slavery? How does this passage then relate to you and your relationship to those you work for? To what extent do we factor in the circumstances behind the situation?
- Talk about the example of Christ (v21-25). What would it look like for you to ‘entrust yourself to the One who judges justly’? (We’ll look closer at the example of Christ next week.)
- Go back through 1 Peter 2:13-20 and note all the references to God (at least one explicit reference in each verse, except v18). How does your relationship to God affect your submission to others in authority over you?
- In what primary way would God be calling you to ‘submit yourself’ to the authorities he has placed in your life? How will you know when you are doing it? What will this mean in your relationship with God?
