Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- Read 1 Peter 2:4-10. How does this passage connect to what has come before in 1 Peter?
- There are many OT quotes/references which shape this passage. Use cross-references to find and check those out. What is the significance of Peter’s use of the OT as he speaks of the Living Stone/Cornerstone?
- It would also be good to check other cross-references for how both Jesus and Peter use the image of cornerstone to describe Christ and His ministry. Why is this so important and so often given as a framework for the foundational life and ministry of Jesus?
- What does Peter mean by referring to Jesus as the Cornerstone? What does that show us about who Jesus is? What does that mean for how we respond to Jesus?
- Contrast the responses to the Cornerstone (some “come to him/trust in him”; others “reject/do not believe”). What are the different results for these two types of people? What impact does this have on you?
- In what practical ways is your foundation shown? Where does it show that Jesus is your foundation; and where is that not so clear?
- There are a number of characteristics mentioned in verses 9 and 10. If you have “come to” Jesus as your foundation and Savior, what is true of you? Do you live like this is who you are? Why or why not?
- What would it mean for you act/live out of the realities of 1 Peter 2:9, 10? Take a moment to talk about each of these items, and what difference that makes for you and us. What would be the visible/practical ways this would come out in your daily living?
- God speaks to us in His word – what is the one primary way that 1 Peter 2:4-10 speaks to you? If you are not sure, take some time for slow, prayerful meditation on the passage, asking God to speak to you from His word.
