Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
  1. If you have a study Bible or other study material, discuss the background to 1 Peter.  How is that relevant to what we face today?
  2. How well does your identity (how you see yourself) line up with what is presented in 1 Peter 1:1, 2?
  3. How often do you really think of yourself as one of God’s precious people? How are the Father, Son and Spirit involved in your life (v2)?
  4. Have you ever had a move that made you feel out of place?  In what ways do you feel like a “stranger/exile/foreigner” in this world?  How do you think that sets up the reality of the ‘various trials’ and suffering that we will face?
  5. When you think of what you need to make it in the world, what comes to mind? Where is “grace” on that list?  Why is grace (and peace) so important in Peter’s hopes for these people (1:2; 5:12, 14)?  Where are you aware of your need for God’s continued grace, and what are you doing about it?
  6. In what ways do you find it hard to ‘stand strong’ as a Christian in our world? What do you think it means for us to stand strong (or stand firm/fast), as Peter writes in 1 Peter 5:12?
  7. As we take a number of weeks in 1 Peter with the broad theme/goal of helping us to stand strong – what might God want to be doing in your life specifically during this season?
  8. Additional personal investment – If you want to get more out of this I would encourage you to invest yourself in it. Maybe read the book of 1 Peter once a week for the next month or so (1 chapter/day, 5 days of the week). Or maybe read and meditate and pray on the section coming up for the next week (example: 1 Peter 1:3-12 for next week). Or maybe memorize a section of the book to keep your focus on it. Whatever investment you make will be a part of God’s forming you to be a person who stands strong in his grace …
