Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- Review 1 Peter 4:12-19. The original audience of this letter was people facing suffering as Christians; how do you think they would have heard and received this paragraph?
- How do you hear and respond to this section of Scripture (and the theme of suffering in 1 Peter)?
- Why should Christians not be surprised by trials and sufferings?
- On Sunday we highlighted some thoughts from ministry partners in India – in light of sufferings they face – what did you take away from hearing their perspective?
- This passage links joy and suffering (as do other places in 1 Peter) – can joy and suffering go together? If so, how? What are appropriate expressions of that (and what are not)?
- Why does Peter so often give the reminder to do right; not to suffer for doing wrong? Have you found it easier or harder to keep doing right when suffering?
- Peter links our sufferings with the sufferings of Christ (every chapter in this book mentions both!); what impact does that have on you?
- What does it mean for you to entrust / commit yourself to God in hardship and suffering (4:19; cf 2:23-25)?
