Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- What comes to mind when you think of ‘sharing your hope’ as a Christian?
- What have been your recent experiences or opportunities in sharing your hope?
- The message focused on v15 – in three parts. The first was But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Sounds good, but what do you think that means? What does it look like in your life when Christ is set apart as Lord? When He is not? What does the theme of ‘doing good’ (from the context) have to do with this? How does this relate to not fearing (v14)? What might you do to increasingly set apart Christ as Lord in your heart?
- The second part is Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. How prepared are you to discuss your faith? What kind of an answer do you think people are looking for? What kind of an answer do you think this passage has in mind? What is the reason for your hope? Talk about it… The idea is that people would “ask” you about your hope / faith? How often does that happen for you? Why?
- The third part is but do this with gentleness and respect. What happens when people talk about their faith without these two qualities? What happen when people talk about faith with these two qualities? Does “gentleness and respect” mean that you treat everyone’s view as the same / equal? How can you be gentle and respectful to those that don’t share your hope / trust in Jesus? How can you grow in this regard?
- Who are the people in your life that you could most have this type of relationship / interaction with? Pick a few and begin specifically praying for them. Also pray for your life – that your genuine hope will be something they want to ask about. And pray that you will be prepared when the opportunities and conversations come up – and then look for the opportunities!
