Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
  1. What do you think of when you think of a good marriage?  In whom have you seen these characteristics?
  2. Read 1 Peter 3:1-7.  How does this section relate to the broader context?  (Look back to 2:11, 12 and the pattern in relationships from 2:13-25, culminating in 3:8-12. Marriage is a specific area where we stand strong in the grace of God - 5:12.)
  3. Wives:  share a positive example or application of the principle in 1 Peter 3:1-2, 3-4, 5-6.  Avoid abuses of these verses and also excuses for dismissing these verses and stay with the positive intent of the passage.  What is each pair of verses saying and what would it look like for you to live this out?
  4. Husbands:  what is the positive intent of this passage for you?  What kind of a man / husband is this calling you to be in specific relation to your wife, and what does it look like for you to do so?  Avoid any abuse of this passage (or verses 1-6) and also the excusing of this passage.  In what ways can you come to know your wife more, being understanding and considerate of her, as well as respectful and honoring?
  5. The focus of this passage for marriage is this:  draw such love and grace and strength from relationship with God that you can be the kind of husband / wife that God wants you to be.  Take time to prayerfully reflect – journaling can help in this – on what God has for you in this.  What is Jesus inviting you into in your relationship with Him?  What is the Lord asking of you in relationship with your spouse?
  6. If you are not married, how does this passage relate to you (maybe the kind of person you want to become, the kind of person you might want to marry, how you relate to people who are married, etc.)?
  7. Peter wrote this to / for a community of people.  What relationships do you have with others in the community around SunHills that support and strengthen marriage(s)?
  8. Finally, please (on your own or with others) pray for yourself and others and specific marriages in light of this passage.  Thanks!
