Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
  1. Read 1 Peter 2:4-10. We’ve been in this passage a few weeks now, but here now with the distinct emphasis on how this text gives focus and direction to love people.
  2. When was the last time you ‘built’ something?  What was it and how did it join together?  What challenges were faced and how did you deal with them?
  3. From 1 Peter 2:4-10, what is God building?  Why?  What does it mean that “you… are being built” (v5)?  (Compare Eph 2:19-22.)
  4. What does our being built together mean for our relationships with one another?  What does this look like for you practically in your life?
  5. We come again to the idea in this passage of “priesthood” – how are you doing in embracing your role as a priest?  This week we consider the priestly role we have with one another.  Who has served like a ‘priest’ in your life (give an example, preferably not someone vocationally in ministry)?  To whom, and how, might God have you serve?  What would it look like for you, uniquely, to do so out of the reality of your being a holy and royal priest?
  6. Review again the items in v9-10.  How do those realities shape you and your belonging?  What does that mean for how we live in community with other believers?  Where are you prone to place another defining mark (nationality, ethnicity, sports team, etc.) above this?
  7. We highlighted some of the ways we can respond to the call to community – where are you personally with that?  How can those around you help you in the journey to community?  How are you leaning on God for help in that journey?  What can you do yourself to step in that direction (and are you doing it)?
