Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- Review 1 Peter 5:1-7.
- What is the role of leaders in the church? From 1 Peter 5:1-4, what is it that ‘elders’ are supposed to do? Take a moment to consider each of the three contrasts in v2-3 (‘not ___ but ___’). Why is each of those areas important?
- How should those who are not elders relate to those who are (v5)? How is submission in the church similar to public spheres and how is it different (see 1 Peter 2:13, 18; 3:1)? Compare Hebrews 13:17 with 1 Peter 5:5 – what lessons (and applications) can we take on how we relate as a church between leaders and congregation? (We are open to hearing your thoughts on this as well.)
- Humility is the central focus of 1 Peter 5:5b-7. How is humility something you ‘clothe yourself with’ toward one another? How are you doing in that regard and what makes you say so?
- 1 Peter 5:5 ends with a quote – talk about that (where the quote comes from, where else it appears in the NT, what it says about who God is and who we are, etc).
- How does the call to humble ourselves before God (v6) relate to the call to be humble toward one another (v5)? Which one is harder for you and why?
- What kind of ‘grace’ or lifting up will God give to the humble? Where does that trust (or lack of it) show in your life?
- Casting our anxiety on God is part of how we humble ourselves before God – explain and illustrate what that means to you. What anxiety are you being invited to cast before God and how will you do so? How can others support you and enter into that with you? (Humility weaves through all of this – before God and each other.)
- Humility is grounded in God’s mighty hand (v6) and His tender care (v7) – how are both of these necessary for true humility? Which do you need to be bolstered in more and what step can you take in that direction?
- What is the primary response or application that you will walk away with from this passage and study? What will you do about it?
