Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- This week we looked at Luke 18:1-8. Compare this section with Luke 11:1-13.
- Jesus’ point in Luke 18 is clear (v1, etc.). Comment on what Jesus was intending to shape into his followers. Why is this so important to him?
- How would you describe the situation between the widow and the unjust judge? What is she facing? What would she be feeling in making her ‘plea’ before the judge? What would keep her persisting?
- Reflect on the unjust judge – what is true of him? Why would Jesus choose a character like this for this part of this story? Should we think about God – or approach God in prayer – like this unjust judge?
- In what area has it been most challenging for you to ‘always pray and not give up’? Why? What has most helped you in those situations?
- Have you had seasons of crying out to God ‘day and night’ over an issue (v7)? What happened?
- Why do you think Jesus concludes this section with the question about finding faith when he returns (v8)? How does persisting in prayer relate to persevering in faith?
- What is an area that God might be calling you to persist in prayer? What will you do to pray persistently in that area (maybe something from the 10 ‘helps’ that were suggested or something else)?
Pray Persistently – because of your need and because of God’s greatness. Helps toward praying persistently:

- Pray now
- Pray with others
- Pray Scripture
- Journal prayers
