Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
  1. Read Luke 18:9-14. What modern equivalents would you use to re-tell this simple story
  2. Why do you think the Pharisee acted the way he did? What do his actions reveal about his heart?
  3. Why do you think the tax collector acted the way he did? What do his actions reveal about his heart?
  4. How would the shock of the reversal (v14) have been received by the group Jesus was addressing? Where might our perceptions of people be off the mark today?
  5. What does it mean to be ‘justified’ and what makes a person ‘justified’ before God? (Use passages other than just Luke 18 in consideration of these questions.)
  6. Luke 14:7-11 is a different parable but ends in the same way. Take a moment and compare the Luke 14 and 18 parables. Why does Jesus take multiple settings to reinforce the principle of 14:11 and 18:14?
  7. Honestly, where do you have the tendency to ‘exalt yourself’ (pat yourself on the back, want others to know your accomplishments or goodness, etc.)?
  8. When have you been like the tax collector? When was the first time you cried out ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner’? When was the last time?
  9. What can you do to live in genuine humility this week?
