Discussion Questions
- What has been the most refreshing part of your summer (or year)?
- Review the story of Philemon… recalling the background and reading the book itself.
- Philemon was a person who hosted a church (group) in his home (v2) and was known for his love for God’s people (v5). Talk about what it means that the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you (v7)?
- Who refreshes your heart – and how? Whose heart do you refresh – and how?
- Paul received joy and comfort (encouragement) from seeing Philemon’s love refresh others. Can you relate; have you experienced this before? Explain…
- Again, Paul uses the language of ‘refreshing’ the heart in v20; whose heart would be refreshed here and how?
- What does all this teach us about “relationships refreshed”? What does this mean for you personally? What does this mean for how we reach out to new people, resolve conflict, cultivate community, etc.?
- With whom, and where and how, will you follow God’s call to demonstrate love and so refresh the hearts of others (and in so doing bring joy and encouragement to even more people)?
