Further Reflection, Discussion and Application
-
Take time to re-read (or better, re-tell) the story of Acts 12:1-19.
- What do you make of the fact that James is martyred (v 2) and Peter is rescued? How does this relate to prayer?
- The church “was earnestly praying” (v 5); what do you think it means to pray earnestly / fervently?
- When have you had times of earnestly praying? Did those times include praying with others (why or why not)? What happened out of the earnest prayers?
- On a scale of 1-10 (10 being high), how earnest / passionate have your prayers been? To what do you attribute this?
- How often, and in what capacities, are you praying with others? Are you satisfied with this? What might you realistically do about it?
- There is contrast in the power of Herod and the power of God in Acts 12; how does this help Christians deal with opposition and persecution? What does that lesson mean for you at this time?
- Talk about the element of surprise in this text when Peter is rescued (Acts 12:8-16). When have you had times of being surprised by answers to prayer?
- Peter (v 17) directs that they share and celebrate this miraculous answer to prayer. Do you do better sharing prayer requests or answers to prayer? Why? What recent answers to prayer can you recount/ celebrate?
