Further Reflection, Discussion and Application
  1. What do you think most people associate with “religion” and why?
  2. Review the five incidents from Mark 2:1-3:6.  In what ways do you see Jesus contrasting with the ‘religious’?  What were they thinking of Jesus?
  3. Note the ways Jesus used questions – are you surprised by the questions he asked? What do you think was the intent of his questions?  What do his questions show us about him?
  4. What was the outcome of Jesus’ questions in their original settings?  What outcome(s) should Jesus’ questioning of ‘religion’ have on us?
  5. Talk about religious practices (the two main ones mentioned here are fasting and Sabbath-keeping).  Are these binding or valuable today?  Did Jesus expect his followers to fast (check other passages as well)?  Why or why not?
  6. In particular Jesus questioned the religious rules which kept people from acting with love and compassion; essentially keeping others ‘on the outside’. How can – and to whom will – you reach out to with love and care in the ways Jesus did?
