Further Reflection, Discussion and Application
  1. Read Matthew 16:13-20; also consider the context in Matthew (and the parallel accounts in Mark 8 and Luke 9).
  2. Who do people say that Jesus is today?  What views of Jesus do you most often encounter?
  3. Jesus presses the question personally (Matt 16:15) – why?  What does this show us about Jesus?  About us?
  4. What do you think Peter is affirming in his answer (v16)?  What do those things mean and why do they matter?
  5. Matthew 16:17-20 has been a significantly debated passage – what is your understanding of these verses?  How do you support that view?  Are you aware of other views?  How much – and why – does all this matter?
  6. Who do you say that Jesus is? How do you say it? What difference does it make in your life?
  7. How does your view of Jesus, and response to him, affect who you are today?
  8. The journey of knowing Jesus is on-going (Peter’s continued growth in v21). Where are you at in your journey?  Are you aware of what is before you in the journey?  If so, what is it?  In what ways does it include suffering or sacrifice (v21-28)?
  9. Who else in your life would you want to ask the question to: ‘who do you say that Jesus is?’  What is holding back from asking them?
