Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application

  1. What is a parable? How do stories communicate in a way that ‘shapes’ us?
  2. Read or retell the parable in Matthew 13:3-9. What does Jesus’ explanation (v18-23) reveal about the seed and the soils?  What characterizes each type of soil?  What would each have looked like in Jesus’ day?  In our day?
  3. Jesus spoke many things in parables to the crowd (Mt 13:3, 34). What effect and purpose did the parables have (v10-17) with the crowd?  With the disciples?  What effect do the stories of Jesus have with you?
  4. How can you face hardships and yet not be hardened, as the rocky soil?
  5. What ‘thorns’ (see v22) threaten to make your life “unfruitful”?
  6. The “good soil” is characterized by hearing the word, understanding it, and producing a crop.  Describe what that looks like in your life.
  7. What will / can you do to seek to be good soil for the word of God and his kingdom?
