Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
-
What is a parable? How do stories communicate in a way that ‘shapes’ us?
- Read or retell the parable in Matthew 13:3-9. What does Jesus’ explanation (v18-23) reveal about the seed and the soils? What characterizes each type of soil? What would each have looked like in Jesus’ day? In our day?
- Jesus spoke many things in parables to the crowd (Mt 13:3, 34). What effect and purpose did the parables have (v10-17) with the crowd? With the disciples? What effect do the stories of Jesus have with you?
- How can you face hardships and yet not be hardened, as the rocky soil?
- What ‘thorns’ (see v22) threaten to make your life “unfruitful”?
- The “good soil” is characterized by hearing the word, understanding it, and producing a crop. Describe what that looks like in your life.
- What will / can you do to seek to be good soil for the word of God and his kingdom?
