Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- The title this week was “Hope for the Downcast” – what do you think of as “downcast”? Where and how do you see this in society? How can you relate?
- Review the setting and struggle of Lamentations 3 (also that of the Psalmist in Ps 42). Does this level of honesty in prayer surprise you? Why do you think ‘laments’ like this are recorded in Scripture? What lesson might this have for your prayers?
- Re-read and reflect on the positive statement made in Lamentations 3:21-26 (compare the statement of Ps 42:5 and context). What do you make of this strategy to “have hope”? Is it easy? What does it produce? How often do you practice this yourself?
- What does the author “call to mind” (Lam 3:21-26)? Take time to think on/ recall/ discuss God’s love, compassions, faithfulness, etc.
- How does the above (response to question 4) help you to “have hope”?
- What does it mean to “wait” for God and his salvation? How is this related to hope in God and seeking God (all mentioned in this section of Lamentations 3)? Where do you need to do that now? How can others support you in this (and vice versa)?
- What will you do this week to keep your hope focused on God’s love?
