Faith - Pleasing God

Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- Describe someone who has been a hero to you and what you respect in the person.
- Read through Hebrews 11. Do these people seem like heroes to you – why or why not? What are we to learn from these examples of faith (cf Heb 6:11, 12; 13:7)?
- Considering the letter of Hebrews and the surrounding context of chapter 11 – how is the call to have faith relevant to the original audience? And how is that same message relevant to us / you today?
- The message mentioned some things that faith is not (cultural notions) in contrast with what real faith is (from Heb 11). In what ways do you see biblical faith contrasted with popular ideas about faith?
- A repeated focus in the first few verses of Heb 11 is the truth that faith is pleasing to God (people are “commended” for it). Why do you think that is so important to emphasize here?
- Meditate again on Heb 11:6 – and personalize it: how does this verse speak to you and your life right now? Talk about what it means for you to believe that God exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Where are you living with confident faith in that truth?
- Where might God be stretching you in faith or giving you opportunities to strengthen faith? How will you respond?
Note – as we go through this series on faith I encourage you to read through Hebrews 11 on your own and to memorize Hebrews 11:1, 6 this week.
