Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- Sometimes we hear phrases like “the proof is in the pudding” – how true is that in relation to our faith?
- Read through Hebrews 11 again. How are the examples here - Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham and the rest - demonstrations that real faith results in radical obedience?
- Reflect on Abraham’s obedience in going (Heb 11:8-9; Gen 12:1-8) – which part of this seems most challenging to you and why?
- Hebrews 11:11, 12 speak of Abraham and Sarah’s faith in anticipation of the promised son (see Gen 15; 18; Rom 4:16-22). What lessons do you learn about faith from this?
- The re-telling of Abraham’s example of faith is broken up with the statement of Hebrews 11:13-16 (cf v10). Why do you think this is here? How does this relate to Abraham’s faith? To the challenges facing the original recipients of Hebrews? To us? How do these realities give hope that sustains faith and obedience?
- Reflect on Abraham’s obedience in offering up Isaac (Heb 11:17-19; Gen 22:1-19) – why do you think God gave Abraham this “test”? What happens when our faith is tested (James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 1:6, 7)?
- In the message we talked about the stretching in this faith that results in obedience by listening, living, and looking – talk about an application from each of those to you.
- How was the testimony an encouragement to you to take a step of faith (obedience)?
- Finish the sentence: For me, real faith will result in the radical obedience of _______.
