Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
- Jesus continues speaking to the crowd in parables (Matt 13:2, 34, 36) – what do you think the original listeners would have thought of Jesus’ stories? How does Matthew 13 show us Jesus’ intention in these stories?
- The parable of the weeds – look at this story (v24-30) and the explanation (v36-43). Jesus clearly identifies the one who sows the good seed, the field, the wheat, the weeds, the enemy, and the harvesters. How would you put it all together and summarize the message of this parable?
- What response do you have to this parable? (Does it scare you, encourage you, puzzle you, reassure you, etc… and why?)
- How do the parables of the mustard seed and yeast work together? How would you summarize the point of these parables?
- What response do you have to these parables? (Do they scare you, encourage you, puzzle you, reassure you, etc… and why?)
- Why do you think these three parables are grouped together (by Jesus and in Matthew’s recording)? What is the common thread which runs through all three?
- How can these three parables influence how you look at what is happening in the world? How do these stories from Jesus shape your engagement with what is happening around you (your neighbors, community, the ministry of our church, etc.)?
