SunHills June Update
- Dan Haakenson
- Jun 3, 2010
There are a number of important updates as we head into this month. Take a look:
BE WISE
“What was I thinking?” “I wish I would have…” We’ve all said things like this. But we have also all probably, at some point, said “I’m so glad that I…” “It was really good for me to…” The difference between these two types of statements is what the Bible calls wisdom. We want to act and live with wisdom. We need wisdom. And the pursuit of practical wisdom is going to be the focus of our summer series: Be Wise. We will be in the book of Proverbs (and I hope you are reading along, ‘a Proverb a day’ – see the note from earlier this week). Here’s a preview for this month:
- 6/6 – Fear of the Lord
- 6/13 – Wisdom from the Heart
- 6/20 – Wisdom for Dads (We’ll hear sharing from a special panel of SunHills dads. We’re also introducing an exciting ministry opportunity with children in India.)
- 6/27 – Wisdom about Sex (PG-13)
SUMMERBLAST
SummerBlast, our annual VBS event for kids K-6th, is coming up June 28-July 2. This year’s theme is One God, One Great Adventure and we’re exploring the story of Joseph. It’s sure to be a week full of high energy, games, and fun. Our final evening, Friday July 2, is for the entire family, and all of SunHills is invited. Please join us for dinner and the experience of an Egyptian marketplace!
SummerBlast is a great opportunity to invite your friends - be thinking about whom you would like to bring. Sign-ups begin June 6.
This event does not happen without lots of volunteers and there are many ways to serve at this year’s SummerBlast – from decorating to leading a small group, from serving food to helping with activity centers. Please contact Jill Vogel () about how you can be involved.
LIVE THE MISSION
Let me preview two important opportunities for us to live the mission of sharing the love of God and spreading the good news of Jesus.
- Be the Church (BTC) – Aug 15. BTC is an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our community as we work together to serve and meet real physical needs in the lives of those around us. Every August, we cancel our services for a Sunday and devote that day to serving at various projects in our community. We also have on-going projects throughout the year. Please note Aug 15 on your calendar – we’ll have more information about this year’s projects in the weeks to come.
- Live the Mission has local expressions (like BTC), and it has global emphasis as well (Mt 28:19, 20). Toward that end we have been cultivating a partnership with a ministry in India. And now we have an exciting opportunity to take another step in that partnership and share the love of Jesus with kids there. More information will be presented on June 20 – don’t miss it.
WORSHIP
Another “thank you!” to our teams who are leading with such grace and skill during these weeks. As we move into June we will have various people lead again – some familiar and some as guests. Before you go too far down the guessing-game road (is this a worship pastor candidate?), let me reassure you that we will communicate clearly if someone that we bring in is being considered as a prospective candidate for this position. We are still diligently engaged in the search and are praying for God’s guidance and timing as we search. In the meantime we will continue to sing and celebrate about whom God is and His grace in Jesus which we receive through the Spirit.
BUDGET
Thank you for your consistent and generous giving. This is an act of worship and it also directly facilitates the ministries of loving God, loving people, and living the mission (both on our campus and beyond our campus as well). So thanks for your partnership in this way!
THANKS!
June 1 marked the one-year anniversary of Kevin and Vanessa Woolums’ ministry at SunHills. Kevin and Vanessa, we are thankful for you and we celebrate the ways that God has used you here over this past year! Thank you for your investment in students’ lives, leadership for youth ministries, and participation in the broader family of SunHills. We are grateful to God for you and your ministry here.
Grace - dan
