This is one of our favorite passages of scripture and we certainly hope you all enjoy it as well. We think you’ll get the most out of it reading it several times. It leads to a wonderful meditation this time of year:

John sets the stage that the entire world has fundamentally changed. Jesus, God’s son, eternal in nature, has come in utter humility to take the form of a baby to be with us! He left his rightful place in heaven to live perfectly in our place on earth. In this Jesus knows our experience as humans (Heb. 2:18).

As we held our twin boys three years ago the reality of Christ coming to us was so much more meaningful. Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matt. 28:18), yet for our sakes became a helpless infant. Our boys could do nothing on their own, they were helpless. To think that our Jesus took this form in order to redeem us to the Father is unfathomable, yet he did.
As you move through this passage, focus on these things:

  • The Deity of Christ, he was in the beginning with God.  He and the Father are One.  All things are made through him.
  • Christ is the light of the world.  Those born of God are his children.
  • The word becomes flesh and His glory is beheld first hand.  He comes to dwell (think tabernacle) with us.

“Man’s maker was made man that He, Ruler of the stars, might nurse at His mother’s breast; that the Bread might hunger, the Fountain thirst, the Light sleep, the Way be tired on its journey; that Truth might be accused of false witnesses, the Teacher be beaten with whips, the Foundation be suspended on wood; that Strength might grow weak; that the Healer might be wounded; that Life might die.”

― Augustine of Hippo
